Section 220 of the Santa Maria dei Rotoli cemetery in Palermo holds the remains of 34 migrants who lost their lives in the Mediterranean while trying to reach Italian shores.

Surrounded by gravestones, crosses and mausoleums, their markers – sheets of paper thinly protected by vinyl covers – slowly decompose with the passing of the seasons.

Some are named, most are not, identified only by the ships that retrieved them and the dates on which they were found.

These 34 left their countries, homes and families for their own reasons, surviving journeys filled with unthinkable hardships and unimaginable suffering.

These are 34 among thousands found every year in the waters between Libya and Sicily.

They should be remembered.
